The ninth season of Modern Family premiered on September 27, 2017 on ABC. Modern Family employs an ensemble cast. The series focuses on Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill), his daughter Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen), and his son Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) who live in Los Angeles. Claire is a homemaker-turned-company worker mom married to Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell); they have three children, Haley (Sarah Hyland), the college dropout, Alex (Ariel Winter), the smart middle child attending Caltech and Luke (Nolan Gould), the offbeat only son. Jay is married to a much younger Colombian woman, Gloria (Sofía Vergara), and is helping her raise her college freshman son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez) and their 5-year-old Joe (Jeremy Maguire). Mitchell and his husband Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) are raising an adopted Vietnamese child, Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons).
